In order to provide high quality and more competitive services, Japan's third largest shipping giants Kawasaki Kisen Kaisha, Ltd., Mitsui OSK Lines, Ltd. and Nippon Yusen Kabushiki Kaisha agreed to integrate their container shipping business and establish a joint venture subsidiary in 2016. On July 7, 2017, the joint venture “Ocean Network Express” ( “ONE”), headquartered in Singapore, was officially formed, with a total investment of US $3 Billion.
ONE set a goal of starting operations in more than 90 countries in six continents. However, before doing so, it needed to launch its new corporate website, which serves as its content centre, as well as, more than 30 local sites.
To ensure a timely and successful launch of the new platform, ONE decided to adopt a development framework with out-of-the-box functions. These functionalities had to be the easily customized and have a short development time. Considering that 33 regional sites will be launched, reuse is another fundamental requirement for the project. Considering these requirements, the team decided that Drupal was the ideal content management system for the project.
Due to CI&T's extensive experience in building Drupal sites and leading Lean and Agile projects for Fortune 100 companies, ONE has chosen CI&T as its project solution provider. In the initial phase, CI&T identified 3 main milestones for the project:
• Build a global website
• Deploy local sites
• Add and localize website content
CI&T’s implementation process
During the first sprint, CI&T and ONE's governance team carried out an intensive survey and discovery of the demands, and with this it was possible to successfully collect the main technical and commercial requirements. During this phase, roles were also defined, as well as, the technological platform processes, final performance, and key results. . It is worth mentioning that the values of Lean and Agile shared by ONE and CI&T were indispensable for the success of the project.
With its proven Lean Digital process, CI&T completed the design, development and testing of the UX/UI platforms less than 5 months. CI&T's deep knowledge of Drupal and Acquia Cloud Website Factory was key to creating a robust framework, which made it possible for subsequent rapid development, and quick delivery and verification.
The website was officially launched in February 2018, allowing ONE to start accepting reservations two months before starting operations. Since the launch of the new platform, ONE has had several improvements compared to their old platform, all of which have helped them to progress on the path towards achieving strategic objectives. ONE's feedback on the new platform includes:
• Enhanced customer experience: simplified menus, layouts and location-based pop-up reminders allow users to easily access related content;
• Strengthening of functions: Through integration with E-commerce and CRM tools, the platform offers a wide range of functions, including viewing delivery schedules, booking space, issuing bills of lading, shipment tracking and inbound processing, among others;
• Greater customer involvement: customers can sign up for various information such as export shipping schedules, surcharges, service guides, etc.;
• Excellent content governance: Drupal-based CMS allows the content team to adjust and update content on all sites as needed.
By the beginning of May 2018, most of ONE's high-value customers were already using the platform for daily transactions. With the successful delivery of the project, CI&T became ONE’s preferred digital partner, responsible for the execution of its most challenging projects.
Freddy Fok, Strategy and Innovation Manager at ONE, commented: "ONE is the most challenging integration in the history of the shipping industry, to build a compatible platform you will face several constraints. . The CI&T team has successfully deployed our global and local websites, while following the rules and regulations, and has really lived up to its reputation as a leader in Lean and Agile development. We will continue to work with CI&T and its digital innovation team to further deepen digital initiatives."
