Transforming Emergency Response Through Inclusive Design and AI Technology

In a groundbreaking collaboration, CI&T led the design of a pilot mobile application

aimed at providing critical emergency information in Victoria, aligning with the organization's commitment to accessibility and inclusivity.

This initiative united four organizations with the shared goal of revolutionizing emergency response systems.

consulted throughout the design process, ensuring accessibility, particularly for those with visual impairments.

contributed language services and technology for multilingual communication.

The principal challenge

confronted by the project was to improve the accessibility of the VicEmergency app, ensuring its effectiveness for diverse communities.

This encompassed accommodating non-native English speakers and individuals with disabilities.

The project's overarching goal was to extend the reach of emergency services, acknowledging a diverse population composition with 30% born overseas, 27% conversing in languages other than English, and 17% living with a disability.

The specific objective involved testing an AI Translation solution for real-time emergency information in English, Arabic, and Simplified Chinese.

Innovative Technology and Design Challenges

Translation Capability

CI&T collaborated with 2M to develop an AI Language Solution, combining AI and human services for real-time translations. This ensured accuracy and quality control in delivering critical information.

Accessibility

The UI design prioritized simplicity for visual manageability and supported screen readers. Insights from extensive user research guided inclusive design decisions, making the app usable for diverse demographic groups.

A comprehensive onboarding process guided users during stressful situations, emphasizing simplicity and clarity.

Map-based Accessibility Challenge

Addressing the challenges of traditional map accessibility (how does a visually impaired person read a map?), CI&T introduced a dedicated card-based solution that replicated map functionalities in a text-based format.

The Results

Building Trust and Respect in Communities

The success of the pilot application is measured by the ease of navigation, comprehension of translated content, and effective use of assistive technologies. Post-launch feedback provides valuable insights into user satisfaction and the app's overall effectiveness in delivering crucial emergency information.

Prioritizing inclusivity, especially for culturally and linguistically diverse and disabled communities, EMV and CI&T demonstrated a commitment to building trust and respect.
