NHS Foundation Trust: Innovating the Clinical Journey for Health Assessments

Challenge

Covid and government cutbacks left millions of UK patients waiting for clinical tests. A world-renowned NHS Foundation Trust needed a streamlined process to help clear the backlog built up in its brand new satellite service hubs, designed to test new patient flows and processes. The challenge was two-fold; to automate the clinical testing process and secondly, to accelerate data collection through the new hubs to continually improve the service.

Solution

We ran a lean conception phase focussed on the two challenges, split across 3 sprints:

1. Learn and empathise: conducted user and stakeholder interviews, site visits, technical audit and service design to understand complex existing processes across 3 different patient clinics

2. Define and Ideate: defined the solution scope across the two challenge areas and ideate future service design to meet service requirements, developing interactive prototypes

3. Test and validation: tested prototypes with patients on-site to validate effectiveness and develop a working technical proof of concept to integrate with medical instruments in-clinic

Results

Fully validated prototypes and working proof of concepts developed in just 8 weeks

Created an in-clinic data capture flow and continuous improvement framework to aid clinic management

The recommendations were factored into the design and development of a brand new clinic at a new London site
